England Faces Iceland in Final Friendly Ahead of Euro 2024, Hoping to Bolster Gareth Southgate's Squad Selection.
The Three Lions beat Bosnia & Herzegovina 3-0 on Monday but all their goals came in the second half. Their opponents defended well in the first half and it was only a Cole Palmer penalty that broke the deadlock in the 60th minute. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Harry Kane (who came on as a substitute) scored late goals to give England a flattering 3-0 victory. That was their first win of 2024 after losing to Brazil and drawing with Belgium in March. Both of those games were played at Wembley and England were fortunate to avoid two defeats. They needed a late Jude Bellingham goal to earn them a 2-2 draw with Belgium. The loss to Brazil is the only one they've had inflicted on them in their last eight matches. This is their final match before going to Euro 2024 where they take on Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia in their group.
Iceland could only finish fourth in their Euro 2024 qualifying group and were 12 points behind the top two. All their three wins in that group were against the bottom two sides, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Liechtenstein. Iceland are playing the first of two international friendlies they have this month. The other sees them travel to the Netherlands on June 10. They'll be using the games to prepare for their Nations League group that sees them play Turkey, Wales and Montenegro. Their last match was in March and that ended in a disappointing 2-1 loss to Ukraine after taking an early lead. Over 90 minutes they have only won four of their last 15 games. Wins have come against countries such as Guatemala and Honduras. They famously knocked England out of the 2016 European Championships but are not at that level in 2024. We tip England to win this match and lead at both half and full time.
