France vs Luxembourg France narrowly missed World Cup glory but reigns as EURO favorites, while Luxembourg emerges as a surprise contender after significant improvement.
France’s first fixture in June will be a home game against Luxembourg as Les Bleus step up preparations for Euro 2024. This Wednesday game, at the Stade Saint-Symphorien, will be the first of two before France meet Canada ahead of the Euro finals. Heading into the first major competition after their 2022 World Cup final loss, Didier Deschamps has the weight of expectations. From a possible tally of 24 points in the Euro qualifiers, France managed 22 and are among the pre-tournament favorites. There’s no question about France’s abilities coming into this game but they haven't been consistent. Their 3-2 win over Chile in the last game was their first victory in three outings. It was also the third straight match in which they conceded twice and this will be a concern for Deschamps. A 2-0 home loss to Germany right before beating Chile was their second straight loss to the Euro 2024 hosts. In between the losses though, France managed four wins and will still be favorites here.
The last time these two nations faced off was in the 2018 World Cup qualifiers, a game hosted in France and ending 0-0. That was the only time in 15 matches that Luxembourg avoided defeat against France. They will have to be at their best to repeat that feat here. That’s not to mean the visitors have been poor in recent matches. They’ve actually won more matches than France across the last four outings. Luxembourg’s 2-1 win over Kazakhstan in March was their third in four matches. However, the quality of opponents they’ve faced can’t match France’s, and that’s where the difference is. The last time Luxembourg met a top team, they were blanked 9-0 by Portugal. They’ve also suffered losses to Slovakia and Georgia in recent months. Playing away from home doesn’t bring out the best of Luxembourg. They have just six wins in their last 17 away matches
