Manchester United look to move above Newcastle into sixth on Wednesday, while Sheffield United look to buy time in their relegation battle.
Manchester United welcome Sheffield United to Old Trafford this week in a game the home side dare not lose. After scraping through their FA Cup semi-final with Coventry at the weekend on penalties after a 3-3 draw, United boss Erik Ten Hag will want a much better performance here. Especially against the division’s bottom team. His team has not been consistent or impressive at home this season, scoring 23 goals but conceding 22. Despite lying 7th in the table, Manchester United have a -1 goal difference. They have also gone four games without a win in the Premier League. If United harbour ambitions of taking a European place for next season a win is paramount here. In truth, the home fans will be expecting a big win against the team with the worst defence in the Premier League.
Sheffield United come into this game with relegation now almost certain following their 4-1 home defeat against Burnley at the weekend. The Blades have lost six of their last nine games, scoring nine goals in those games, but conceding 28. They have also beaten Manchester United just once since 1993, drawing one other game over that period. Regardless of how you look at the data, it has been a monumentally poor season for the Blades. With little left more than pride to play for, they would love to be the sixth side to win at Old Trafford in the Premier League this season. The chance of that actually happening though are very slim.
