Benfica will look to return to winning ways when they face Toulouse in the Europa League last 32

Benfica’s first appearance in the UEFA Europa League will be in the knockout round playoffs where they play Toulouse. The first leg will be played at the Estádio do SL Benfica in Lisbon on Thursday. Benfica finished third in Group D of the Champions League behind Real Sociedad and Inter Milan, and just above Red Bull Salzburg only on total goals scored. At least they are coming here on the back of some improved form, despite a 2-2 draw with Vitoria over the weekend. That was just the second match they dropped points from their last 13 competitive matches where they won 11 and lost just once. Home record is equally good with six wins out of the last seven in all competitions, so the home fans will be eager for a good game.

Toulouse qualified for Europe for the first time in 14 years and then made it memorable by progressing to the knockouts for the first time. They finished second behind Liverpool in Group E, only by a one-point difference, winning three and drawing two and losing just once. That defeat though, came on the road, when they lost 5-1 to Liverpool. Despite such impressive performances earlier in the campaign, their recent form pegs them back. Toulouse have lost three of their last four competitive matches, winning only one and coming with a lot to improve in this match.

Despite a minor blip at the weekend, and a recent shock cup exit to Estoril, Benfica have been sensational since December and should have too much firepower for a beleaguered Toulouse side.

Another disappointing defeat at the weekend has plunged Toulouse back into relegation trouble at home, and even though they have performed better on the continent this season, this will be a hugely difficult assignment for the French side.
