Two managers under great pressure will lock horns at Selhurst Park on Monday when Crystal Palace host Chelsea.

Last season ended on a massive high for Chelsea as they won the Champions League, beating Manchester City 1-0 in the final in Porto, their second European crown. But now Thomas Tuchel’s side must build on that, and a genuine challenge for the Premier League title will be the least Chelsea’s board expects, on top of another run in the Champions League (not to mention Super Cup and Club World Cup victories). Chelsea haven’t had the greatest of pre-seasons, however, with so many players at the European Championships including five in the final – meaning they played just four friendlies prior to their Super Cup clash with Villarreal.

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, will be pushing for a better finish having ended the Roy Hodgson era in 14th, with 18 defeats from their 38 matches in the Premier League last season. Hodgson has since been replaced by Patrick Vieira after a summer of struggle at Selhurst Park in trying to appoint a new manager, seeing various names pop up and eventually fall through. Under Vieira, Palace have played five times in pre-season, winning four and drawing one, showing positive signs going into the new campaign.

An emphatic Chelsea success is not always the catalyst for a turnaround in fortunes, but faced with an Olise, Eze and Guehi-less Palace crop, the Blues should experience few roadblocks en route to a much-needed maximum here.

Twelve successive defeats to Chelsea already represents Palace's longest losing run against a single team in league history, and an unlucky number 13 is surely on the menu for Hodgson's injury-hit and morale-depleted side, who have coincidentally failed to keep a clean sheet in 12-straight Premier League affairs.
