After managing only one point from their last five matches, Serie A's struggling Genoa will seek to turn their fortunes around against a high-flying Fiorentina when the teams clash.

Sitting third from bottom in the standings after nine matches and suffering a 3-0 defeat to Lazio last weekend, Genoa's second season back in Serie A has started poorly. With only seven league goals scored so far, the Grifone are underperforming after a respectable mid-table finish last year. Since early September, no team has garnered fewer points or conceded more goals, putting pressure on head coach Alberto Gilardino to reverse their troubling decline.

In response to their scoring woes, the Genoa board has authorized the signing of the flamboyant striker Mario Balotelli, who makes his return to Italy’s top tier after a four-year absence. He is expected to support main striker Andrea Pinamonti, although Balotelli, having arrived as a free agent and lacking match fitness, is unlikely to feature on Thursday. 

Unfortunately for them, history isn't in their favor: Genoa has won only once in their last 13 encounters with Fiorentina, with that solitary victory dating back to September 2019. Given Fiorentina's impressive recent form, they will be eager to secure a third consecutive away win against Genoa, which would mark a record streak in this matchup.

The Viola have hit their stride since late September, notching two wins in the Conference League and claiming 13 points from the last 15 available in Serie A. Following a 6-0 rout of Lecce and a 4-0 win against St. Gallen, Fiorentina continued their momentum with a 5-1 victory over fellow top-six contenders Roma, where Moise Kean scored twice and Edoardo Bove delivered a standout performance against his parent club.
