Manchester United will launch their 2024-25 Europa League season with a match against FC Twente from the Eredivisie at Old Trafford.
Despite finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, Manchester United is competing in the Europa League for the seventh time since its rebranding in 2009, following their FA Cup victory over Manchester City in May. The team has had a mixed start to the new season, with three wins, three losses, and one draw from seven matches. After consecutive wins against Southampton (3-0) and Barnsley (7-0), they settled for a goalless draw against Crystal Palace, leaving them 11th in the league standings.
Now, United will turn their attention to the Europa League, facing FC Twente at home on Wednesday as part of a newly-expanded 36-team competition. They are favorites to succeed, having lost only one of their last 24 home games in this tournament. FC Twente, who finished third in the Eredivisie last season, have started the current campaign well, gathering 11 points from six matches and winning their last two games against Heerenveen and Almere City.
Under head coach Joseph Oosting, who took charge in July 2023, Twente will aim to break a seven-game winless streak in the Europa League. Historically, they’ve struggled against English teams, with just one win in their last 13 encounters, which was a narrow victory over Fulham in the 2011-12 Europa League group stage.
