Liverpool are gearing up to compete with other Premier League clubs for the signing of the Germany international.

Liverpool are  among several Premier League clubs interested in Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah. The centre-back has made 357 competitive appearances since his transfer from Hamburg to Leverkusen in the summer of 2025.

Tah was a key player for Leverkusen in their unbeaten domestic campaign last season, which saw them secure the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal. He also played a crucial role in their run to the Europa League final, although they were ultimately defeated by Atalanta.

After an impressive season with 48 appearances, Tah was linked with a move to Bayern Munich during the recent summer transfer window. Despite no move materializing, Tah remains a target for several clubs due to his current contract situation.

Entering the final year of his contract, Tah has indicated he does not plan to renew with Xabi Alonso's side. While Barcelona is also showing interest, the defender is attracting significant attention from the Premier League.

Liverpool are among the Premier League clubs vying for Tah’s signature, alongside Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur. Tah is reportedly eager to join a Premier League team competing in the Champions League and will be able to negotiate pre-contract agreements with clubs outside of Germany starting in early 2025.

Liverpool's pursuit of a new defender comes in the wake of their summer transfer window where they did not replace Joel Matip, who left on a free transfer, and Sepp van den Berg, who moved permanently to Brentford. This has left them with four primary centre-back options: Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konaté, Jarell Quansah, and Joe Gomez.

The need for a new centre-back could become more pressing depending on the futures of Van Dijk and Gomez. Van Dijk is in the final year of his contract, and Gomez was previously linked with a move away. If either player departs, Liverpool may need to seek a replacement in the transfer market.
