Atlético Mineiro has a chance to knock out São Paulo, the current Copa do Brasil champions, when they face each other in the second leg of their quarter-final at Arena MRV.
Atlético Mineiro is close to securing a spot in the Copa do Brasil semi-finals, having won their first away match of the 2024 tournament last time out. A draw on Thursday would see them reach the final four for the first time since their 2021 triumph.
Under Gabriel Milito, Mineiro has achieved back-to-back single-goal victories and remains unbeaten in their last four away games. At home, they've not lost a Copa do Brasil match in regular time since a 2018 defeat by Figueirense, although they advanced on penalties.
Despite dropping six points in three home games this season after scoring first, Mineiro has a strong record against São Paulo, winning six of their last eight encounters. São Paulo, the defending champions, suffered a rare home defeat in the competition in the first leg, a setback reminiscent of their loss to Flamengo in the 2022 semi-finals.
São Paulo, who came from behind in last year’s Copa do Brasil to win the title, is struggling in the Brasileiro Serie A with no wins in their last five away games. They have, however, been successful in their last five second-leg Copa do Brasil fixtures, with their last defeat in this stage occurring in 2023. They have not been eliminated at this stage since 2021 and have never beaten Atlético Mineiro at Arena MRV.
