Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United will welcome Tottenham Hotspur to St James' Park for their third game of the 2024-25 Premier League season.
After a somewhat underwhelming 2023-24 season, where Newcastle finished seventh, missed out on European football, and saw marquee signing Sandro Tonali sidelined for most of the year, Eddie Howe may have hoped for a smoother 2024-25 campaign.
However, the season started with a setback as Fabian Schar was sent off just 28 minutes into their opening Premier League match against newly-promoted Southampton on August 17. This left Newcastle struggling to maintain control of the game. Joelinton scored the only goal in the 45th minute after Southampton’s goalkeeper Alex McCarthy made a critical error, passing the ball to Alexander Isak in his own penalty area.
Tottenham Hotspur, meanwhile, started their season with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Leicester City on August 19, despite dominating possession with 70% and taking 15 shots. Ange Postecoglou's team displayed their attacking prowess with Pedro Porro scoring the opener, though they were vulnerable to counter-attacks.
In their last nine top-flight encounters, Newcastle and Tottenham have combined for 40 goals, but Spurs have lost their last two league visits to St James' Park with heavy defeats of 6-1 and 4-0.
