Aiming to secure their third consecutive win to kick off the Premier League season, reigning champions Manchester City will head to the London Stadium to face West Ham United.
After starting his tenure at West Ham with a 2-1 loss to Aston Villa, Julen Lopetegui celebrated his first win last weekend with a 2-0 away victory over Crystal Palace. Tomas Soucek broke the deadlock in the 67th minute, followed by a goal from captain Jarrod Bowen, and the Hammers secured their first Premier League clean sheet since January, ending a 19-game streak without one.
West Ham advanced to the third round of the EFL Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Wednesday. The decisive goal came in the 88th minute from Mohammed Kudus, although it might have been disallowed if VAR were in use, as the shot deflected off Bowen’s arm before entering the net.
Manchester City, while sometimes slow starters under Pep Guardiola, have begun this season strongly, winning their first two Premier League games and scoring six goals while conceding just one. Erling Haaland, the Premier League’s top scorer for the past two seasons, scored four of those goals, including a hat-trick in a 4-1 win over Ipswich Town.
City have a strong record against West Ham, losing just one of their last 14 league visits and remaining unbeaten in their last nine trips to the Hammers since a defeat at Upton Park in October 2014.
